About

The Palimpsest Studio invites you to discover the vibrant world of medieval art through making. Based in Canterbury, Kent, we offer workshops, talks, and collaborative projects that explore the techniques behind the art of the Middle Ages. Our sessions welcome beginners, artists, students, and heritage professionals alike, offering a space to engage with pre-modern craftsmanship and create their own work inspired by the past.

The initiative was established by Dr Cassandra Harrington, an art historian dedicated to bridging the gap between academic research and material practice. We bring together scholarly expertise and practical know-how to illuminate how medieval artisans worked with parchment, ink, colour, and gold.

Through our programme of workshops, lectures, and partnerships, The Palimpsest Studio connects the rich heritage of medieval craft with contemporary creative and educational communities. We work with museums, universities, schools, and heritage organisations seeking experiences that are both engaging and historically grounded.

We believe that learning by making deepens our understanding of the past – opening new ways of thinking about art history and inviting wider participation in its ongoing story.
